Why Isn’t My Coffee Percolating Properly? Common Issues & Fixes

When you’re brewing a large batch of coffee, whether for a busy morning rush, a church service, or a catered event, the last thing you want is a coffee urn that refuses to percolate. At SYBO Kitchen, we know how frustrating this can be, and we’ve helped customers troubleshoot and get back to brewing quickly.
Here are the most common reasons your coffee isn’t percolating and simple fixes you can try before calling for support.
1. Not Enough Water in the Tank
The Issue: If the water level is below the minimum fill line, the percolation cycle can’t begin properly.
The Fix: Always check the gauge and fill the urn to the recommended minimum level. Our 50-cup urn requires a minimum of 35 cups of water to function properly, while our 100-cup urn requires at least 75 cups.
2. Incorrect Coffee-to-Water Ratio
The Issue: Too much or too little coffee grounds can affect flow. Grounds that are packed too tightly may block water circulation.
The Fix: Use the recommended ratio

3. Basket or Stem Isn’t Properly Seated
The Issue: If the stem isn’t aligned with the heating well, the water won’t rise and cycle through the coffee basket.
The Fix: Double-check that the stem is firmly placed in the center well and the basket is seated securely on top before brewing.
4. Ground Coffee Too Fine
The Issue: Espresso or fine grind coffee can clog the filter basket and block water flow.
The Fix: Use a medium grind for best results in percolators. If you’re buying pre-ground coffee, look for "drip" grind, not "espresso."
5. Electrical or Heating Element Issue
The Issue: If the urn isn’t heating at all, it won’t create the steam needed to drive percolation.
The Fix: Make sure the unit is plugged into a dedicated outlet (avoid power strips).
Reset the breaker if it has tripped. If the urn still won’t heat, the heating element may need service or replacement.
6. Scale or Mineral Build-Up
The Issue: Hard water can leave mineral deposits that clog the heating tube or stem.
The Fix: Descale your urn regularly using vinegar or a commercial descaler. A good routine is once a month for light use or once a week for heavy commercial use.
